Glossary of CSD terms and concepts

Content

It's a good idea to annotate here in this page the main terms and concepts used in CSD. Use the list and find the term definition of your interest. Please, give us feedback, in case you find an ambiguous or unclear definition.

Note that many concepts are copied or adapted from Wikipedia. So click the corresponding links to find more information.

Chapter I on combinational circuits

PLD. A programmable logic device is an electronic component used to build reconfigurable digital circuits. Unlike a logic gate, which has a fixed function, a PLD has an undefined function at the time of manufacture. Before the PLD can be used in a circuit it must be programmed, that is, reconfigured. Chapter II on sequential systems

FSM. A Finite State Machine is a mathematical model of computation. It is an abstract machine that can be in exactly one of a finite number of states at any given time. The FSM can change from one state to another in response to some external inputs and depending of its current internal state; the change from one state to another is called a transition. An FSM is defined by a list of its states, its initial state, and the conditions for each transition. Source Wikipedia.

Chapter III on  microcontrollers

mC or MCU. A microcontroller unit is a is a small computer on a single integrated circuit. Source Wikipedia.
